Step-by-step application process

Where to apply

The application must be submitted in person. The location depends on your registered residence:

• Embassy of Japan in Madrid — for residents of most autonomous communities.
• Consulate General of Japan in Barcelona — for residents of Catalonia and other northeastern communities.

When to apply

You can submit your application between 3 months and 3 weeks before your planned travel date. Applications outside this window are not accepted.

Required documents

• Valid passport.
• Completed application form.
• Recent passport-size photograph.
• Travel plan or intended itinerary.
• Proof of funds (bank statement).
• Medical certificate.
• Criminal record declaration.
• Flight ticket, if available (affects the required funds amount).

On the day of your appointment

The application is submitted in person. Bring all original documentation. Embassy or Consulate staff will review your file.

After the appointment

The minimum processing time is 5 business days. Once approved, you must collect the visa in person at the same office where you submitted your application.
